Gift Guide — Scientists, teachers and STEM lovers
For the people who explain the universe to the rest of us
Scientists and science teachers are hard to buy for, because they can spot a gimmick instantly. The ExplOrbit Galaxy Gift Package is built on real selenography: each territory is recorded at genuine lunar coordinates, the Moon map and facts flyer are accurate, and the certificate says plainly that it is a commemorative conservation pledge, not a claim of ownership. It is a gift that respects the person receiving it.

Built on real lunar science
Lunar features are named by the International Astronomical Union, and many of them honor scientists: Copernicus, Kepler, Tycho, Archimedes and Newton all have craters named after them. The Tycho Highlands, one of the regions where ExplOrbit territories are recorded, surround one of the youngest and brightest large craters on the near side, whose rays of ejecta are visible to the naked eye at full Moon.
The leading explanation for the Moon’s origin is that it formed about 4.5 billion years ago from debris thrown out when a Mars-sized body collided with the young Earth. It is still moving away from us by about 3.8 centimeters a year, a figure measured by bouncing lasers off reflectors the Apollo astronauts left on the surface.
A classroom gift that keeps teaching
For teacher appreciation week, the end of the school year or the holidays, the certificate can be made out to a whole class, and the Moon map, facts flyer and activity poster slot straight into lessons on phases, gravity, craters and the history of exploration.
International Observe the Moon Night, held every autumn, is a natural moment to bring it out: the class can find the region of its territory and log the phase that night.
For working scientists and researchers
A recorded territory makes a memorable gift for a lab or research group, a colleague who has just defended a PhD, or a scientist who is retiring after a long career. The certificate can carry a group name and a personal dedication.
The conservation framing tends to resonate with scientists in particular. The Moon preserves a record of the early solar system that erodes almost nowhere else, and protecting it while exploration accelerates is a question their colleagues are actively debating.

Common questions
Straight answers
- What is a good gift for a science teacher?
- One that can be used in class. The ExplOrbit Galaxy Gift Package includes a Moon map, a facts flyer and an activity poster that fit lessons on phases, gravity and craters, and the personalized certificate can be made out to the teacher or to their whole class.
- Can the certificate be made out to a classroom or research team?
- Yes. Whatever names you enter at checkout, whether a person, a class, a lab or a research group, are recorded on the certificate and in the ExplOrbit registry exactly as written. You can also add an optional dedication of up to 240 characters.
- Are the coordinates on the certificate real?
- Yes. Each territory is recorded with selenographic latitude and longitude, the coordinate system astronomers use to locate features on the Moon, and the coordinates point to a real place on the lunar surface. The certificate is a commemorative record of that place, not a claim to it.
- Is ExplOrbit honest about Moon ownership?
- Yes, and it says so everywhere. Under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty no nation can claim the Moon, and no one can sell it. An ExplOrbit certificate is a commemorative collectible and a conservation pledge, and that statement appears on the certificate, in the terms and on every page of the site.
